The "Golden Mercury" Award was established in 2002 and initiated by the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry management. The contest is annually supported by the Council of Federation of the RF, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of the Regional Development of the RF in order to stimulate business development in Russia based on the best traditions of Russian entrepreneurship.
The competition takes place on two levels: first on a regional, than on a federal level. Regional rounds winners can than take part in the federal round. Thorough selection of contest participants on the regional level guarantees the final the strongest companies. Only the best of the best get to take part in the federal round where the strongest participants are selected. This helps to strengthen the high status of the awards and single it out of the many. It became extremely significant for small companies and exporter companies in diverse areas, such as the manufacture of industrial and consumer commodities, building and services, in innovative, scientific and technical and international cooperation.
The three best competitors for each of the nominations are chosen by analyzing the integral indicators of an organization's financial activity. Then the results of those competitors are examined by the Council of National Experts that includes experts from the Russian CCI, the biggest economists and representatives of the largest Russian companies. The winners are awarded with bronze "Mercury" statues and Russian CCI diplomas. The two other companies receive symbolic "Golden Mercury" medals and diplomas. Other laureates get the right to use the "Golden Mercury" trade mark to advertise their products.
On 17 June 2010 the World Trade Center held an award-giving ceremony to the winners of the RF Chamber of Commerce and Industry's National Best Entrepreneur Prize "Golden Mercury".
This year the Awards took place for the seventh time and they are now very respected in the Russian business community. The regional grasp has grown and the quality of the companies that participate is also very high. In the federal round of the contest more than 250 applications were received from regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry that included the ones from big regional centers as well as small towns and villages. Having the right to take part in the federal stage of the competition is already a big step for local entrepreneurs, which makes them more competitive in their region, city or town. Winning at the federal level enables a company to be known and respected in the All-Russian scale.
Various officials took part in the Awards Ceremony, such as Members of the Council of Federation of the RF, deputies of the State Duma, representatives of the Russian President's Administration and authorities of Russia's many regions, Federal Ministries and Departments, members of the government and managers of the Russian and regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry, entrepreneur associations and social organizations.
